Boys Beach Activities (6)
My boys love the beach! We’ve lived walking distance from the beach for the last few years and since they both stopped eating sand a while ago, it has also become one of my favourite places to take them.
This is an ongoing list of some of the things boys love to do at the beach:
- Drawing roads in the sand – find a stick and pull it behind you in the sand to make a road. Preferrably make your Mum or another person follow your road and do lots of twirls and twists to make sure they can’t keep up. (see photo)
- Make Jelly Sand – a friend of ours, Jesse, taught us this one…Do a little dance on top of wet sand at the edge of a creek until it gets really soft and jelly-like. (see video clip)
Make a Castle – join lots of sand castles together to make one big enough to sit inside, decorate with stones on top of walls and seaweed for flags, drftwood bridges and a moat. If you make it close to the water’s edge, the boys can stay inside as long as possible while the waves approach. (see photo)- Make a Sand Cake – easy to make even if you don’t have spades or buckets with you. Decorate with shells and stones, add little sticks for candles and sing to the person who’s having a birthday next.
Dam the Creek – If you are lucky enough to find a beach with a creek, you may never get your children to go home. They can dam it with stones, push the edges down with their feet, make little swimming pools, jump over it, float leaves down it….- Clay Paint – A lot of beaches in NZ have banks made of lovely messy orange clay. Mixed with water in a bucket, this makes lovely paint for trees, stones and bodies, can also tip into a beach pool to make the water orange. (Photos below)
I would love to hear from other Mums about what their boys enjoy doing at the beach.
